The mountain gorilla is among the most endangered species on earth listed under the IUCN in 2018. A subspecies of the eastern gorilla, there are up to 1063 mountain gorillas divied into two populations; the largest population is found within Uganda's Bwindi impenetrable forest and the other in the Virunga mountains which encompass three national parks namley Rwanda's Volcanoes park, Uganda's Mgahinga park and Virunga national park in Congo.
Gorilla Families
Uganda is home to 14 habituated gorilla families with 12 groups available for gorilla trekking while 2 are for gorilla habituation experience and these include Rushegura, Mubare, Habinyanja, Oruzongo, Kyaguriro, Nkuringo, Mishaya, Nshongi, Kahugye, Bweza, Busingyeb and Nyakagezi. Rwanda on the hand is home to 10 habituated gorilla families namley Susa, Sabinyo, Karisimbi, Umubano, Amahoro, Kwitonda, Bwenge, Agashay, Ugyenda & Hirwa.
Gorilla trekking expedition.
Gorilla safaris in Uganda and Rwanda are subject to gorilla trekking permits with a Ugandan permit costing US$ 700 per person while that of Rwanda is at US$ 1500 per person. Only 8 people can be allowed to track a group per day and can only be in the midst of the gorillas for one hour observing and taking pictures of the gorillas as they rest, feed and play. You can book a gorilla permit in Uganda and Rwanda online with tour operator or in person at the UWA & RDB offices.
