Serengeti National Park is a world-class safari destination that has registered several wildlife movies being recorded there. It is perfect for filming because of its vast savannah plains that are filled with a high concentration of predators, blue wildebeests and many other animals which make it an extraordinary wildlife space. Located in northern Tanzania, Serengeti National Park stretches from the northeast Simiyu region to the eastern Mara region. It covers a wide area of 14,763 sq. km. The park was established in 1940 and got its name from the local word “siringet” which is used by the Maasai and translates as “the place where the land runs on forever”.
Serengeti National Park is renowned for its large population of predators. It is home to over 3,000 lions, 1,000 leopards, 3,500 spotted hyenas, and 550 cheetahs. Other carnivores in the park include honey badger, striped hyena, African golden wolf, black-backed jackal, and serval. Elephants and buffaloes are abundant while rhinos are present although they are occasionally sighted. This makes all the big five present in the park. Together with the Masai Mara National Reserve, Serengeti National Park is a highlight for the Great Wildebeest migration which involves countless wildebeests, zebras, and gazelles. There are over 500 bird species in Serengeti National Park including the Secretary bird, grey-crested helmet shrike, yellow-throated sandgrouse, Hildebrant’s starling, and usambiro barbet. Some of the Tanzanian endemics in the park are the rufous-tailed weaver, grey-breasted spurfowl, and Fischer’s lovebird.
