Arusha National Park

Located just 25km from Arusha, Arusha National Park is the nearest wildlife safari destination to the mentioned city. It is situated in the Arusha region in the northeast of Tanzania. The park is home to Mt. Meru and also a key habitat to a large population of giraffes. Arusha National Park was established in 1960 as Ngurdoto Crater National Park to protect and conserve a few parts of the area including Ngurdoto Crater but excluding Mount Meru. In 1967, the mountain was included and the park’s name changed to Arusha National Park. The current size of the park is 137 sq.km.

This park is home to a variety of mammal species and common animals include Cape buffalo, warthog, zebra, giraffe, black and white colobus monkey, elephants and blue monkey. Predators in Lake Manyara national park include leopards, but these are rarely seen. With over 400 bird species recorded in the park, you can rely on it for a great birding experience. Some of the bird species in the park include the Narina trogon, Silvery-cheeked hornbill, Peregrine falcon, Egyptian goose, Pied Avocet, Hammerkops, Great-headed bush shrikes, Bar-tailed trogon and Red-fronted parrot among others.

By air: if you want to fly from other airports to the park, you can use a domestic airline or international airline to Kilimanjaro where you will be picked up by your safari driver and transfer by road. The road transfer takes about one hour. By road: from Arusha, you can get to Arusha national park using either a private car or public means of transport. A drive in a private safari vehicle takes approximately 40 minutes.
