Adorning the northern part of Tanzania, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a natural wonder. The protected area conserves the vast Ngorongoro crater which is the highlight for safaris to the destination because of its high concentration of wild animals. Abbreviated as NCA, the conservation area got its name from Ngorongoro crater. It is located in Ngorongoro district, west of Arusha city. Ngorongoro Conservation Area covers 8,292 sq.km stretching to areas close to Serengeti National Park. Ngorongoro Crater was initially occupied by hunter-gatherers and later replaced by the pastoralists. The Mbulu and Datooga lived in the area until the 1800s when they were driven out by the Masaai. Ngorongoro was established in the year 1959 and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.
The area arguably has the densest wildlife populations including the Big Five animals. It is a perfect place to go if you want to see large herds of herbivore mammals such as impalas, Thompson’s gazelles, zebras, blue wildebeest, waterbucks, elands, and. More large mammal species in the crater include the black rhinos and elephants. Some of the predators that are commonly seen around the Ngorongoro Conservation Area include lions, cheetahs, spotted hyenas and jackals. African wild dogs are present but rarely seen. Ngorongoro Crater is a pleasant place for bird watching. The salt lake located in the crater is home to a great number of birds including pink flamingos.
