Kilimanjaro National Park

Kilimanjaro National Park is one of Tanzania’s top safari destinations. It is located 300 km south of the equator, in the Kilimanjaro region. The park covers an area of 1,688 sq. km including the whole of Mount Kilimanjaro, which is the highlight attraction there. Kilimanjaro National Park started as a game reserve with Mount Kilimanjaro and the adjacent forests. It was declared a forest reserve in 1921 and the mountain above the tree line was reclassified as a national park in 1973. In 1987, the park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 2005, Kilimanjaro National Park was expanded to include Kilimanjaro Forest Reserve’s montane forest.

The most popular attraction in Kilimanjaro National Park is Mount Kilimanjaro, a stunning range surrounded by a montane forest belt that harbors several wildlife animals. The park also has a portion of grasslands and moorlands. Some of the animals found in the park include cape buffaloes, African bush elephants, tree hyrax, grey duikers, blue monkeys, and leopards.

The major activity in Kilimanjaro National Park is hiking Mount Kilimanjaro. This is Africa’s highest free standing range, at 5,895m above sea level. By air – fly to Kilimanjaro International Airport and connect to the park by road. The park is located about 76km from the airport. By road – from Arusha city, a road transfer takes 1-2 hours and from Serengeti National Park and Tarangire national park, it takes 4-5 hours and 4-6 hours respectively.
