Nyerere National Park in southern Tanzania is the largest national park in the country. It covers an area of 30,893 sk. km. This park was recently renamed after splitting the large Seloeus Game Reserve which originally covered around 54,000 sq. km. It was named Nyerere National Park in honor of the first president of Tanzania, Julius Nyerere. Initially, Selous Game Reserve was established in 1922 and declared as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1982. In 2019, the Tanzanian National Park Authority proposed to split the game reserve and it was declared. The northern sector was named Nyerere National Park.

The park has incredible densities of wildlife. It harbors about 100,000 wildebeests, approximately 120,000 buffaloes, 250,000 impalas and large numbers of zebras, giraffes, Lichtenstein’s hartebeests and lions among others. Leopards, hyenas, and elephants are present. The water bodies in the park are home to crocodiles and over 35,000 hippos. More than 440 bird species have been recorded in the park.
